Since 2014 when Melvyn first journeyed to the township of Soweto deep in South Africa to work on a project with Buskaid, the extraodinary String Ensemble run by the violist Rosemary Nalden, he has formed a strong bond with the project now known as Soweto Strings.
Said Melvyn : “To listen to them play is one of the most touching and moving experiences. Rehearsing Mozart with them in the heart of Sowerto was quite a surreal experience! But the surreal soon turned into the sublimewith elegant phrasing, articulation and inate poise, all thanks to Rosemary’s meticulous training.”
In 2009, the ensemble was named by Gramophone as one of the “ten most inspiring orchestras of the world”, and has toured Europe and South America to great acclaim. Melvyn has worked and performed with the Ensemble on Mozart concerto K414 on A Major. .
The Soweto Strings is available to tour with Melvyn Tan during Jun/-Jul and Dec/Jan periods.
